Starry Nights in Ladakh: Guided by Skilled Young Women

In the tranquil village of Hanle, nestled in India’s Himalayan Ladakh region, stargazing takes on an extraordinary dimension. Here, the cosmos reveals itself vividly, thanks to a group of talented young women. Despite the biting night chill, visitors gather to explore the celestial wonders that have become a vital part of Hanle’s cultural tapestry.

Four local women—Palzes Angmo, Tsering Dolker, Tsering Yangdol, and Padma Chamchot—serve as informal astronomers, guiding tourists through the majestic tapestry of the cosmos. By day, they manage family-run guesthouses, playing host to travelers. By night, they transform into astro-guides, setting up telescopes and elucidating the mysteries of the night sky.

These women have always shared a deep connection with the starry skies above Hanle, but only embraced the science behind it recently. A comprehensive training program launched in 2022 by the Ladakh administration and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics marked a pivotal shift. Twenty-four young locals, including our four educators, acquired skills in astronomy, learning to calibrate telescopes and navigate the starry realms overhead.

The night begins around 9pm, when these guides set up their equipment under the glittering expanse. Together with visitors, they embark on a journey, observing lunar landscapes and the vivid rings of Saturn. The highlight is the Milky Way, which becomes even more spectacular when the village’s lights are deliberately switched off, intensifying the dark sky experience for avid tourists.

The remote, high-altitude setting of Hanle, boasting minimal light pollution, provides unparalleled stargazing opportunities. Recognition in recent years as India’s first Dark Sky Reserve has further boosted Hanle’s visibility, attracting curious travelers eager to witness the universe from one of the world’s highest observatories.

Since becoming engaged with this nocturnal allure, these young women have gained confidence, becoming not only guides but advocates for astronomical tourism. As they help tourists capture stunning celestial images, they document their own nightly discoveries, sharing insights online and inviting others to appreciate Hanle’s night sky.

The role these women have embraced extends beyond tourism, nurturing a growing interest in astronomy in the region and transforming Hanle into a beacon that attracts both stargazers and scientists from around the globe.
