Surprising Exits at Shenzhen Open Snooker Championship
The Shenzhen Open kicked off with surprising results as notable contenders Ronnie O’Sullivan, Zhao Xintong, and defending champion Mark Williams were all eliminated on the first day. The tournament, featuring some of snooker’s top talents, saw unexpected performances shake up the expected player progressions.
O’Sullivan, who has yet to claim a ranking title since the start of 2024, faced a tough match against China’s Jiang Jun. Despite leveling the game with impressive breaks of 92 and 52, O’Sullivan couldn’t maintain his momentum. Jiang, ranked 64th in the world, sealed a memorable 5-2 victory with a decisive break of 108, earning him a match against Zak Surety in the next round.
Meanwhile, Scottish player Scott Donaldson orchestrated a significant upset by defeating the 2025 world champion Zhao Xintong. Ranked considerably lower than Zhao, Donaldson exhibited skillful play with breaks of 77, 105, 50, and 62 to clinch a win in the final-frame decider. Donaldson is set to face Pang Junxu of China in the third round.
Mark Williams also faced disappointment as he lost a close 5-4 match against China’s Fan Zhengyi, committing a crucial error on the final pink.
In other notable matches, Judd Trump from England had an unchallenging climb into the last 16 as his opponent, Anthony McGill, withdrew due to health reasons, allowing Trump to advance past China’s Huang Jiahao with an effortless 5-0 score.
Elsewhere, Neil Robertson of Australia bested China’s Liu Hongyu with a solid 5-2 victory, and England’s Chris Wakelin emerged victorious over Welshman Liam Davies with a 5-3 win. China’s Si Jiahui and Belgium’s Ben Mertens also moved forward in their respective matches.
The tournament’s early rounds wrapped up with successful first-round progressions from players like Jamie Clarke from Wales, England’s Andrew Higginson, Marco Fu from Hong Kong, and Sam Craigie from England.
The shock exits and thrilling performances have set an intriguing tone for the remaining matches of the Shenzhen Open, promising fans more electrifying snooker action.
