In a significant move under ‘Operation Amistad’, India has initiated humanitarian assistance for Venezuela, which has been severely affected by a recent earthquake. Two C-17 Globemaster aircraft of the Indian Air Force departed on Friday, carrying vital relief supplies alongside a 41-member rescue team, aiming to bolster ongoing relief and rescue efforts in the South American country.

The Ministry of External Affairs expressed solidarity, stating, “India stands shoulder to shoulder with the government and the people of Venezuela during this difficult period.” This relief initiative reflects India’s commitment to supporting its allies in times of crisis.

Details of the Mission

Operation Amistad, described as a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) mission, was launched following a devastating earthquake that has led to significant loss of life, injuries, and destruction across Venezuela. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the mission on X, mentioning, “Operation Amistad underway! Two @IAF_MCC C17s took-off today for Venezuela with urgent assistance to support their post-earthquake relief efforts.”

The consignment includes essential supplies such as an Indian Army Field Hospital Unit, over 35 tons of relief materials, medicines, and medical equipment, notably including two BHISHM cube portable hospitals. The team consists of experienced rescue personnel and medical professionals who will collaborate with Venezuelan authorities on search and rescue operations, emergency medical care, and broader humanitarian relief efforts in the affected regions.

Earthquake Impact and Casualties

The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening (June 24, 2026), marking some of the most powerful tremors the nation has experienced in over a century. Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela’s acting President, reported that the death toll has climbed to 920, with approximately 3,360 individuals injured. Tragically, the casualty numbers are expected to increase further as thousands remain unaccounted for.

“The government of India extends its heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured,” the MEA stated. It further emphasized that India will stay in close coordination with Venezuelan authorities, ready to offer additional assistance as required.

This humanitarian operation underscores India’s proactive approach to international disaster response and showcases its readiness to contribute substantially to global humanitarian efforts in times of crisis.
