Desperation and Displacement
Masada’s difficult situation is shared by many in Gaza City’s Palestine Square. Despite a desire to relocate, financial constraints and the lack of options left by conflict-related devastation make it nearly impossible. Initially from Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza, Masada and her family were forced to relocate twice within a year due to the war, ultimately settling in this fragile apartment.
The broader issue underscores the dire state of housing in Gaza. A comprehensive report by the United Nations, World Bank, and European Union highlights that almost 76.6% of Gaza’s housing has suffered destruction or damage. An estimated $71 billion is needed to rebuild these essential structures, a figure that paints a grim picture of the region’s struggle for recovery.
Tragedy and Warnings
On September 16, a six-storey building in Gaza City collapsed, tragically taking the lives of 21 residents, including 12 children. This incident serves as a chilling reminder for those living in similarly compromised conditions. Abdullah Abu Hajar, residing in the dangerously unstable al-Najma building with his family, stays awake nightly, alert to every creak and shift in their home, constantly fearing collapse.
