Bangkok Faces Severe Flooding; Disaster Zone Declared
In a dramatic response to unrelenting rainfall, officials have declared Bangkok a disaster zone after significant flooding overwhelmed the city. Across all 50 districts of Thailand’s capital, nearly 300 millimeters of rain fell over three days, causing water to engulf roads and threaten homes and businesses.
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced the emergency status as city workers grappled with inundated canals and highways. Images circulating on social media depicted vehicles stranded in deep water and commercial establishments struggling to keep water at bay.
East Bangkok Hit Hardest
While the entire city is affected, the eastern districts have encountered the most severe flooding. The governor expressed hope for receding waters should rain diminish, promising efforts to expedite water drainage from the congested canals. He warned residents to remain vigilant, particularly those residing near waterways.
Chadchart reassured citizens that while conditions have momentarily stabilized, it may still take several days for waters to subside completely if no further rain ensues. He urged people to relocate vehicles to higher grounds, with the city’s public transit offering temporary parking solutions until early October.
Community Impact and Precautions
This deluge, marking one of Bangkok’s worst in recent history, has caused numerous disruptions. Somkid Pheuk-ngam, a local vendor, shared her experiences of being stranded due to waist-deep waters invading her neighborhood. Describing it as more severe than the notorious 2011 floods, she ceased her business operations amid the crisis.
Further exacerbating the situation, Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation forecasts potential flood risks extending through central and northeastern regions, causing concerns about further environmental and infrastructural impact.
