Green Leader Zack Polanski Faces Calls to Resign Amid Party Disagreement
Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party in the UK, is standing firm amid mounting pressure and calls for his resignation from within his party. This follows his contentious decision not to participate in a debate regarding a proposal that labels Zionism as a form of racism, which was recently voted in as party policy.
Vivien Lichtenstein, who leads the Jewish Greens, has criticized Polanski, suggesting that his leadership position should be reconsidered. Her frustration is rooted in an accusation that Polanski avoided addressing a major internal issue, marked by a controversial motion defining Zionism and supporting a single Palestinian state.
Meanwhile, former Party leader Caroline Lucas also expressed concerns. She has pointed out what she views as a lack in leadership, urging Polanski to engage more directly with pressing party matters. Jonathan Bartley, another former co-leader, echoed similar sentiments, advising Polanski to take responsibility for his absence during a critical vote and the resulting backlash within the party.
Despite the criticisms, Polanski remains steadfast, affirming his dedication to his role. He points to the increased vote share in the recent by-election as a sign of the party’s growing support, even though they were defeated by Labour’s Sagal Abdi-Wali.
The internal tension has sparked resignations and distancing from the Green Party among some members and councillors, as well as disapproval from the European Green Party. Critics like Andy Burnham, the UK Prime Minister, have urged a reversal of the contentious policy to prevent it from influencing future election campaigns.
Polanski has been under pressure to articulate a clear stance on the motion, which describes the historical and ongoing displacement and alleged genocide of Palestinians as rooted in a racist ideology. Although he identifies issues within the motion’s wording, he has said he would have considered supporting it if amended with certain clarifications.
The Greens are now grappling with comparisons to past antisemitism issues faced by other political parties, raising questions about internal cohesion and future direction. Polanski, however, has insisted on maintaining an inclusive environment within the party, distinguishing between anti-Zionism and antisemitism.
