Warships as Mini Aircraft Carriers: India’s and US’s Diverging Strategies

Warships Evolving: Mini Aircraft Carrier Concepts Explored by India and the US

In a new move to enhance naval capabilities, India and the United States are both venturing into transforming traditional warships into versatile mini aircraft carriers. This transformation is rooted in distinct strategies and technologies, where each nation brings forward innovative advancements in unmanned aerial systems.

India is pushing ahead with its Naval Shipborne Unmanned Aerial System (NSUAS) initiative. This program, cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council, aims to bolster the country’s maritime surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. The Indian Navy intends to procure about 40 unmanned systems to integrate with warships measuring over 100 meters in length. These drones will primarily focus on intelligence gathering, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, while extending support to anti-piracy, counter-terrorism, search-and-rescue, and battlefield damage assessment operations.

A significant aspect of India’s drive is the emphasis on indigenous development, with a mandate of 60% local content. Deploying these drones involves complexities such as tackling the challenges of maritime environments, ensuring secure data transmissions, and managing operations amidst potential electronic disturbances.

Meanwhile, in the United States, the focus is on developing advanced AI-powered aerial systems that operate independently of traditional runways. The American innovation, spearheaded by Shield AI, has led to the creation of the AI-piloted X-BAT drone. This technology is particularly noteworthy for its vertical takeoff and landing abilities, allowing operations even in areas where runways are unavailable. Its advanced AI system also enables it to perform a range of missions including strikes and electronic warfare, with a reach extending beyond GPS and communications interference.

The financial backing for the US initiative is considerable, highlighted by a recent $150 million expansion to an existing agreement, bringing the combined investment to $400 million. The ambitious mission aims to start full-scale production by 2029, reflecting the US commitment to revolutionizing naval warfare.

The emergence of these technologies represents a significant shift in how both countries approach the concept of naval aviation. India and the US share a common vision of enhancing naval power without the need for large-scale aircraft carriers, yet their approaches diverge significantly in operational capability and strategic focus. While India aims to enhance reconnaissance and intelligence, the US targets comprehensive combat abilities from its unmanned systems. Both initiatives signify a pivotal change in maritime strategy, reshaping the future of naval engagements.
