Leeds Baby Bank Appeals for Help Amid Rising Demand

Amid growing economic challenges and increasing referrals, Leeds Baby Bank is making an urgent plea for donations to support local families in need. Founded by Chantal Nogbou in 2017, the charity provides essential supplies such as nappies, clothes, and prams to struggling families across Leeds. As winter approaches, the demand for these services is predicted to soar further.

Nogbu, who initiated the charity out of personal experience as a single parent of four, notes a significant surge in referrals from health and social care professionals in recent months. Since June alone, the organization has extended its support to 550 families, a number that is expected to rise.

Impact of Rising Poverty on Families

Recent statistics underscore the gravity of the situation, revealing that nearly half of the children in some Leeds areas now live in poverty. Prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, this rate was one in five, highlighting the dramatic escalation.

Despite having working parents, 70% of the families helped are finding it increasingly challenging to cover rising costs of energy and essentials due to stagnant wages and escalating bills. This financial strain on households in Yorkshire and the Humber makes charitable aid more crucial than ever.

Community Support and Financial Challenges

The Leeds Baby Bank recently moved to a larger space in Armley, enhancing its capacity to serve the community. However, this expansion comes with increased operational costs, further exacerbating financial pressures on the charity.

Nogbu emphasizes the importance of community contributions, stating that even small monthly donations significantly impact the charity’s ability to purchase necessary items, such as a new mattress for a Moses basket.

The collective support from local residents, some of whom choose to allocate the cost of a coffee to the charity each month, is integral to sustaining the Baby Bank’s mission. Nogbu hopes this community-driven support continues to help families navigate these challenging times.
