UN Condemns Sudan’s Civilian Attacks, Calls for Immediate Truce
The United Nations Human Rights Council has issued a strong denunciation of the ongoing violence against civilians in Sudan, urging warring parties to recognize that a military solution is unattainable. The council’s recent session in Geneva highlighted the dire humanitarian situation and unanimously called for an immediate ceasefire to bring an end to the hostilities.
International Reactions and Resolutions
During the session, a resolution was passed to extend the mandate of the international fact-finding mission assigned to document human rights violations in Sudan, receiving significant support with 28 votes in favor out of 47 members. However, Sudan opposed this decision, criticizing the council for not considering its concerns. The resolution also called for the establishment of mechanisms to monitor ceasefire compliance and restore essential services.
Impact of the Conflict
The conflict, primarily between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has led to a massive humanitarian crisis, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and over 13 million displacements since its inception in April 2023. The resolution criticized both sides for extensive violations of international humanitarian law, highlighting the unauthorised drone strikes and bombings that have critically damaged civilian infrastructure, including schools and hospitals.
Condemnation of External Involvement
The Human Rights Council also condemned foreign intervention and the contribution of illicit financial networks, arms trades, and mercenaries exacerbating the conflict. They warned that these factors are fueling the ongoing violence, which has seen significant civilian casualties.
Alarming Reports from Fact-finding Missions
The independent fact-finding mission reported that, following a lengthy siege, the city of el-Fasher in North Darfur was targeted for ethnic cleansing primarily directed at non-Arab groups. This violence involved not only ethnic killings but also widespread occurrences of sexual violence and destruction of medical resources.
Humanitarian Aid Under Threat
In a troubling development, the World Food Programme reported a recent attack on a convoy in South Kordofan that resulted in the death of an aid truck driver and damage to crucial food supplies. The WFP emphasized that humanitarian workers and their resources should remain protected and not be targeted, calling for an immediate, transparent investigation into the incident.
As the situation continues to escalate, the international community’s call for peace remains urgent, with hopes that the involved parties will heed the council’s appeal for a cessation of hostilities.
