Tragedy in Java Sea as Indonesian Ferry Capsizes: 6 Dead, 130 Missing
Devastating Ferry Incident in Java Sea Leaves Six Dead, Scores Missing
In a tragic maritime disaster, an Indonesian passenger ferry capsized in the Java Sea, resulting in the deaths of six individuals. As rescue efforts continue, 107 people have been saved, but approximately 130 remain unaccounted for. The accident has mobilized a massive response from Indonesian authorities, who are racing against time to find survivors.
The ferry, identified as Virgo Transport 8, was carrying a total of 243 passengers and crew when it lost contact during adverse weather conditions. The vessel embarked from Surabaya and was destined for Banjarmasin, located in South Kalimantan. The ill-fated journey was interrupted early Sunday morning, roughly 150 kilometers south of its destination.
Upon receiving the distress signal from the ferry operator, PT Virgo, at around 04:10 local time, a comprehensive rescue operation was swiftly initiated. This effort has brought together the Indonesian search and rescue agency, navy, and maritime police, all of whom have been deploying ships and helicopters to aid those in peril. Around 280 personnel are currently involved in the operation, making use of all available resources to ensure safety and facilitate the rescue mission.
Efforts are ongoing as authorities have established a coordination post at Trisakti Port in Banjarmasin to handle rescue operations efficiently. This hub serves as a critical point where families anxiously await news on their loved ones among the passengers.
Rusmilawati, a Banjarmasin resident, expressed her growing fears as she searches for information about eight family members who were traveling on the ferry. They had planned the sea trip as a return journey from visiting religious sites in Java. Despite her concerns, she holds onto hope that they will be found in good health.
In the wake of this incident, the pain of waiting is a shared experience for many families at Trisakti Port. Misnah found solace in learning of her husband’s survival, although others, like Fredy, continue to wait for any word about loved ones, including his brother, Stevie Manuhua, who was performing shipboard entertainment duties when the vessel vanished.
This calamity underscores the challenges faced in the Indonesian archipelago, where ferries serve as a vital transport method among the nation’s myriad islands. The incident also follows a recent ferry fire near Madura island, highlighting ongoing safety concerns within the local maritime sector.
