Stalin Remains Non-Committal on Upcoming Byelection in Trichy East

NEW DELHI: In a recent statement, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, indicated that no definitive decision has been made regarding his potential candidacy for a byelection to return to the assembly. These comments surfaced amidst growing speculation that he might contest for the Trichy East constituency, recently vacated by incumbent Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

Vijay, who transitioned from acting to politics, successfully retained the Perambur constituency in Chennai but relinquished the Trichy East seat, creating a vacancy that necessitates a byelection.

Stalin, currently the president of the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), previously lost his seat in the Kolathur constituency during the assembly elections on April 23. This defeat marked the end of his party’s one-term government and the rise of Vijay’s two-year-old faction, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

Upcoming Byelections

In addition to Trichy East, several other constituencies are set to hold byelections, including Madurantakam, Perundurai, Dharapuram, Ambasamudram, and Viralimalai. The vacancies in these five seats arose following the resignation of rebel MLAs from the AIADMK party.

It’s noteworthy that except for C. Vijaybaskar from Viralimalai, the other former AIADMK MLAs have aligned themselves with the TVK, with speculation suggesting that Vijaybaskar may also join the party shortly.

The upcoming byelections are anticipated to take place within the next couple of months, shaping the political landscape in Tamil Nadu.
