Sara Sharif’s Siblings Granted Guardianship in Pakistan
Sara Sharif’s Siblings to Remain in Pakistan Under Grandfather’s Care
Sara Sharif’s siblings are set to remain in Pakistan under the guardianship of their paternal grandfather following a significant legal ruling. The decision was made by a court in Pakistan, offering clarity after prolonged uncertainty surrounding their guardianship.
The tragic backdrop to this decision includes the murder of ten-year-old Sara Sharif by her father and stepmother in 2023. Her death stirred international concern, particularly as her siblings found themselves in Pakistan from that year onward, under circumstances arranged by their father, before his conviction for the crime.
Since their arrival in Pakistan, the children, whose ages range from 16 to four, have been residing with their grandfather. After being discovered by police at his residence, they were placed briefly under state care. The grandfather later received temporary custody in October 2023, marking the beginning of their stable living arrangement in Pakistan.
During recent court hearings, the oldest of the siblings expressed that they felt comfortable in their current environment. The legal process included discussions with the children, which concluded with the eldest acknowledging their satisfaction with their grandfather’s guardianship.
Recent developments in the UK have seen Sara’s father, Urfan Sharif, and stepmother, Beinash Batool, convicted and sentenced to lengthy prison terms for their roles in Sara’s death. Her father received a 40-year sentence, while Batool was given 33 years. Additionally, Sara’s uncle, Faisal Malik, was held accountable for contributing to her tragic demise and received a 16-year sentence.
Despite the convictions and the grim history, the siblings will retain their British citizenship, allowing future choices regarding their residence. Meanwhile, the children have integrated into life in Pakistan, attending local schools, excluding the youngest who is yet to commence formal education.
Efforts by Surrey County Council to repatriate the children to the UK faced challenges, culminating in the withdrawal from the legal case in June. Their initiative faced significant legal barriers, primarily due to the jurisdictional complexities involved with pursuing the case in Pakistan.
The recent court ruling in Pakistan provides a long-awaited resolution to the children’s living arrangements, allowing them to continue their lives with their grandfather, as legal processes concerning their guardianship conclude.
