Rising Heating Oil Thefts Alarm Northern Ireland Communities

Growing Concern Over Heating Oil Theft in Northern Ireland

Communities across Northern Ireland are grappling with the escalating issue of heating oil theft, a crime that has significant financial implications for victims. Recently, Kate Clifford, the director of the Rural Community Network, spoke out after her charity’s offices in Cookstown were targeted by thieves who absconded with over 1,000 litres of heating oil. The incident not only left the premises without heat but also led to unexpected expenses for security enhancements.

Clifford highlighted the premeditated nature of the theft, suggesting that the criminals were aware of the freshly refilled tank. “The tank was not in an easily accessible position, and it seems like the thieves carefully planned their actions,” she remarked, emphasizing the peculiar and concerning aspect of the crime.

According to police data, there have been approximately 600 reports of oil and fuel thefts in Northern Ireland since 2021. These numbers peaked during periods of geopolitical tension, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which saw oil prices surge significantly.

Impact of Global Events on Local Thefts

Raymond Gormley, head of energy policy at the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland, explained that fluctuations in global oil prices often coincide with increased theft reports. “During the months following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, thefts spiked due to soaring oil costs,” he stated. He added that the ongoing geopolitical instability in regions like the Middle East continues to affect prices, leading to further theft incidents this year.

For instance, 500 litres of heating oil saw a price rise to roughly £663, while 900 litres reached £1,182 during the periods of conflict. Comparatively, this year’s incidents have already reached 45 by June, close to the total of 59 thefts recorded in 2025.

Preventive Measures for Homeowners

In response to the rising theft cases, both the police and the Consumer Council advise residents to adopt security measures such as installing locks or alarms on oil tanks and securing premises with lighting systems. “Simple steps like locking garden gates and using flexible casings for fuel hoses can deter potential thieves,” recommended Gormley.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has also heightened public awareness through social media campaigns, urging vigilance in particularly affected areas such as Mid-Ulster.

As Northern Ireland braces for further challenges in energy security, it is crucial for communities to remain alert and take proactive steps to safeguard their heating resources.
