Pope Leo Receives Cancer Diagnosis After Lung Surgery
Pope Leo Faces Cancer Diagnosis After Lung Surgery
Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer following surgery to remove part of his right lung. The Vatican, in a recent announcement, confirmed that the pontiff underwent surgery to extract the lower lobe of his lung after a preliminary examination hinted at possible cancer. The procedure took place at Rome’s renowned Gemelli University Hospital.
The post-operative diagnosis identified the condition as lung adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer. The Vatican’s communication did not elaborate on the forthcoming treatment strategy or how this diagnosis might impact the pope’s future engagements.
Surgery Deemed a Success
The Vatican reported that the surgery, which lasted around 90 minutes, went smoothly with no medical complications. Pope Leo, aged 71, is expected to recuperate in the hospital for approximately a week. During this period, all scheduled audiences until October 20 have been cancelled.
As of now, there are no plans for chemotherapy or additional treatments, pending further medical assessments. Notably, the surgical team performed a “radical” removal of the affected lung tissue, aiming to ensure all potentially cancerous cells were extracted.
Upcoming Latin America Tour
This health update comes as Pope Leo prepared for an extensive tour of Latin America set to begin in early November. His itinerary includes visits to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru. Despite the recent surgery, the Pope expressed his intention to proceed with the trip, although adjustments might arise depending on his recovery progress.
Pope Leo’s active lifestyle, which includes swimming and tennis, has contributed to his generally healthy state prior to this diagnosis. His commitment to maintaining these activities suggests optimism for a strong recovery.
Public Support and Recovery Plans
Before heading into surgery, the Pope acknowledged the support of well-wishers gathered at the hospital entrance, indicating his transparent communication with the public about his health challenges. The clarity with which the Vatican has handled this matter highlights a new era of openness regarding papal health issues.
As Pope Leo embarks on this recovery journey, the Catholic community remains hopeful and supportive. Observers and devotees alike are keenly monitoring his health updates, especially in light of the scheduled tour.
