She steps in as judge alongside Paul Hollywood, succeeding Dame Prue Leith, who left the tent earlier this year. Lawson’s entry into this iconic role has been described by some TV experts as the ‘icing on the cake’ for the series.
Nigella’s presence is already creating waves. Critics like those from The Telegraph are hailing her involvement as revitalizing, commenting that she brings a “new lease of life” to Channel 4’s beloved show. Digital Spy praised Lawson as a “brilliant addition” to the Bake Off family, making her debut a focal point of interest.

Despite the initial praise, not all feedback has been positive. Some reviewers, including those at the Independent, felt the launch episode underutilized Lawson’s distinctive charisma, missing out on an opportunity to inject substantial refreshment into the series. Former Bake Off champion Giuseppe Dell’Anno expressed on BBC Radio 4 that while Lawson offers a complementary balance between sentimentality and technical critiques, there’s room for growth in her role.
While some viewers might have anticipated Lawson’s famous playful innuendoes to be more pronounced, critics noted that her judging style was more restrained, focusing on empathetic guidance rather than theatricality. The Guardian lauded Lawson for her wise and generous delivery and how her soothing presence aligns seamlessly with co-host Alison Hammond’s vivacity.
A Mixed Reception
Notwithstanding the praises, the Independent’s take suggested that the Bake Off format remains “stale”, voicing concerns about the series needing more than just a new judge to retain its sparkle. The notion is that while Nigella’s charm is undeniable, the show’s structural sameness may overshadow her contribution.
The show’s messy opening episode didn’t go unnoticed either. According to Metro’s Adam Miller, technical baking mishaps dominated, albeit he credits Nigella with a refreshing impact that may breathe new life into the longstanding series.
As this season of Bake Off continues, the spotlight remains sharply focused on whether Nigella Lawson will become the catalyst for more substantive changes within the show’s format.
