NHS Trust Faces Legal Action Over Children’s Sepsis Tragedies
Legal Proceedings Initiated Against NHS Trust Following Sepsis Deaths of Two Children
An NHS trust is at the center of a legal investigation following the tragic deaths of two young children who succumbed to sepsis. The Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, which oversees Broomfield Hospital, is confronting charges related to the untimely passing of three-year-old Zadie Ajetunmobi and two-year-old Selina Samarina.
The trust is expected to respond to these charges in Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court this December. Allegations have been raised that the care provided to the young girls compromised their safety, eventually leading to their deaths. These proceedings have been instigated by the Care Quality Commission under the Health and Social Care Act.
Tragic Timeline of Events
Zadie Ajetunmobi’s battle with sepsis began in November 2022 when she was hurried to Broomfield Hospital with a high fever. Despite arriving promptly, delays in administering necessary antibiotics resulted in her tragically passing away just hours later. A post-mortem report indicated complications linked to sepsis as the cause of death.
Her parents, devastated by the loss, revealed that the hospital’s sepsis guidelines had not been reviewed since 2017, leaving them with irreversible grief. Similarly, in April 2024, two-year-old Selina Samarina was taken to the same hospital with worrying symptoms, where she was later discharged. Within days, Selina was readmitted and sadly succumbed to her condition.
Court Awaits Response from NHS Trust
An inquiry into Selina’s death uncovered procedural failures, noting that while the sepsis protocol was initiated, supervision by a senior doctor was delayed significantly. The coroner pointed out that during critical evaluation, only inexperienced medical staff assessed her, leading to her premature discharge.
With the legal case drawing near, Adam Sewell-Jones, CEO of Mid and South Essex NHS Trust, maintains that they are assisting the ongoing investigation. However, he refrains from further comments until the legal proceedings conclude. Public attention will be on how the trust responds to the allegations, and the steps it will take to prevent future tragedies.
