Manchester Synagogue Attack: Public Inquiry Announced

Public Inquiry Initiated in Wake of Manchester Synagogue Attack

A public inquiry has been launched to investigate the deaths of two men during a devastating attack at a synagogue in Manchester. The incident occurred during Yom Kippur on October 2, 2025, at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue.

The tragic event saw the death of Melvin Cravitz, aged 66, from multiple stab wounds, and Adrian Daulby, 53, killed by a police bullet while attempting to protect worshippers from the assailant, Jihad Al-Shamie. Al-Shamie, 35, who was originally from Syria and had settled in the UK, was shot dead by police amidst his attack.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized the importance of comprehensively understanding the events of that day. She announced the inquiry, stressing that a thorough examination is vital, including the scrutiny of sensitive national security information that was previously not fully assessed in court.

A significant point of contention has been the police handling of information prior to the attack. Al-Shamie’s extremist tendencies had been deposited on his mobile device, but this crucial data was not analysed until after the attack. This delayed action gathered criticism, as Sir Stephen Watson, Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, expressed regret over the missed opportunities to prevent the tragedy.

Earlier this year, Watson publicly apologized, recognizing that Al-Shamie was under police scrutiny for non-terroristic offenses prior to the synagogue attack. Specifically, Al-Shamie’s arrests in February and September of 2025 had led to the seizure of his phone, yet the critical contents remained unexamined until it was too late. The apology was delivered in the context of additional revelations following the conviction of Al-Shamie’s accomplice, Mohammad Bashir, for a separate planned attack on a military institution.

Responding to the oversight, Watson acknowledged the profound implications of not inspecting Al-Shamie’s devices, noting it as a missed chance to uncover the attack plot. The chief constable expressed his hope that the ongoing independent reviews and public inquiry would now piece together all available evidence, providing clarity and answers to those affected by the tragic events.

The attack, a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by religious communities, has spurred discussions on security and preventive measures within sensitive and community-centric locations.
