Jean Nassif’s Fiery Remote Appearance at Icac Hearing
Jean Nassif, a controversial real estate mogul, delivered a passionate address from his bedroom in Beirut during an inquiry conducted by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac) on Tuesday. Accused of potentially illegal political donations aimed at influencing New South Wales (NSW) politics, Nassif firmly claimed innocence, expressing deep frustration with the system and his accusers.
The inquiry is part of an ongoing investigation into politicians connected to the NSW Liberal Party. Allegations suggest these politicians, among them the former NSW minister David Elliott, may have anticipated receiving millions from Nassif, which he allegedly believed would benefit his interests, including thwarting career advancements of certain officials.
Throughout the video link session, Nassif vehemently denied any corrupt practices, frequently asserting his beliefs with fervor and colorful language. When questioned by Peggy Dwyer, a representative aiding the inquiry, Nassif produced handwritten notes, insisting, “I’m not corrupt.” These notes served as his rebuttal to what he described as manipulative questioning.
The session was marked by interruptions as Nassif accused officials, including David Elliott and building commissioner David Chandler, of misconduct and putting undue pressure on him. Despite Dwyer’s attempts to maintain order and continue the inquiry, Nassif’s heated responses persisted, leading to Assistant Commissioner Fabian Gleeson urging him to focus on the investigation’s goals rather than personal grievances.
Nassif, undeterred by the warnings, insisted forcefully that he would not be silenced, stating, “No one can make me shut up.” His appearance concludes after initially avoiding a previous session due to health issues, which he substantiated with a medical certificate.
Nassif’s expressive testimony underscores the heightened tensions involved in high-stakes political inquiries and highlights the challenges faced by regulatory bodies in seeking accountability.
