Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Official Visit to India Confirmed by MEA

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will be visiting India for a three-day official trip, during which she will participate in the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit.

As per a press release from the MEA, Prime Minister Takaichi is set to arrive in New Delhi at the invitation of her Indian counterpart, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Her visit is scheduled from July 1 to July 3, aligning with the annual summit, which is anticipated to facilitate discussions on enhancing bilateral cooperation as well as addressing regional and global issues of shared interest.

The MEA emphasized that the summit represents a pivotal moment for both nations to review and strengthen their comprehensive bilateral relationship. “The summit will provide an opportunity for both sides to review and strengthen the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation while exchanging views on regional and global issues of mutual interest,” stated the ministry’s release.

This marks Prime Minister Takaichi’s inaugural official visit to India since she took office, signifying the collaborative commitment of both countries to deepen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

The upcoming summit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. During that meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including strategic, economic, technological, and security domains.

Additionally, the MEA report illustrated that Japan remains a vital partner for India, with ongoing collaborations across trade and investment, defense and security, infrastructure development, high-speed rail, digital technologies, clean energy, and cultural exchanges.

In a notable preceding engagement, Prime Minister Modi met with Prime Minister Takaichi earlier this month at the 52nd G7 Summit in France, where discussions centered on improving economic collaboration with an emphasis on trade and investment. Modi remarked on X, “Had a great interaction with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan. India and Japan will continue to deepen ties in diverse sectors, with a priority on trade and investment.”

During the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit held in Tokyo in August 2025, both Prime Ministers adopted a joint statement titled “Partnership for Security and Prosperity of Our Next Generation.” This included a Joint Vision for the Next Decade, which outlined a comprehensive framework for enhancing bilateral relations, focusing on eight crucial areas: economy, economic security, mobility, environment, technology and innovation, healthcare, people-to-people exchanges, and engagement between states and prefectures.

The leaders further solidified their commitment to security cooperation through a Joint Declaration, which seeks to elevate defense ties in response to evolving geopolitical circumstances and security challenges within the Indo-Pacific region.

In a bid to enhance talent mobility and workforce collaboration, India and Japan revealed a proactive Action Plan for Human Resource Exchange and Cooperation, aiming to facilitate the exchange of over 500,000 personnel within the next five years. This initiative includes the movement of 50,000 skilled professionals from India to Japan, thereby reinforcing broader people-to-people connections.

Moreover, the two Prime Ministers introduced the India-Japan Economic Security Initiative, which aims to deepen economic security cooperation by fortifying resilient supply chains for essential goods and strategic sectors. The initiative also prioritizes cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, focusing on areas such as telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals, semiconductors, and clean energy.
