Jammu and Kashmir: Bridge Restored After Cloudburst Disaster

JAMMU: In a remarkable feat, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully restored a bridge that was washed away during a devastating cloudburst in August, which resulted in the tragic loss of 65 lives in Chishoti, located in Jammu & Kashmir’s Kishtwar district. The newly constructed bridge, measuring 140 feet, is a triple double reinforced Bailey bridge that has re-established crucial road connectivity between Gulabgarh and the secluded Machail region.

According to Col Sunil Bartwal, a defence PRO stationed in Jammu, “The restoration signifies the end of a long disruption caused by the catastrophic cloudburst, which not only destroyed the existing bridge at Chishoti but also cut off the sole road link to the remote Machail area.” This statement emphasizes the vital importance of the bridge for local residents.

The restoration operation required extensive efforts, including serious site preparations and the construction of essential abutments. In addition, it necessitated the transportation of various bridging materials, the successful launching of the Bailey bridge, and the development of approach roads, all of which were executed under challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions, according to Col Bartwal.

This swift response by the BRO not only highlights their commitment to restoring infrastructure but also reflects a broader effort to enhance connectivity in the region, which is critical for the economic and social development of these remote communities.
