Two Former Hungarian Ministers Arrested for Corruption
Hungarian authorities have detained two former ministers on serious charges of misusing public funds and accepting bribes, marking a significant development in the country’s political landscape. The arrests occurred shortly after the National Assembly lifted their immunity, a decision underscoring Hungary’s heightened focus on tackling corruption.
Balázs Hankó, once the culture minister under Viktor Orbán’s administration and still a member of parliament for the nationalist Fidesz party, was taken into custody late on Monday. Hankó faces allegations of diverting substantial public funds. Conversely, Miklós Seszták, previously the minister for national development, is implicated in a bribery investigation tied to vehicle procurements and public construction projects.
Current Administration’s Anti-Graft Efforts
Prime Minister Péter Magyar, whose party overthrew Orbán’s government earlier this year, stated that the arrests symbolize a pivotal moment for Hungary, exemplifying a commitment to bringing wrongdoing to light. “Hungarians had their first taste of genuine regime change and justice,” Magyar noted via social media. His government has firmly pledged to address long-standing corruption issues, which it claims have adversely affected the country’s GDP over the years.
The current government has accused past administrations under Orbán of extensive financial misconduct. Magyar himself had his parliamentary immunity suspended, a move he requested to clear his name from accusations unrelated to the Orbán-era probes.
Details of Alleged Misconduct
Both arrested former ministers have denied any malfeasance. Hankó is accused of misappropriating funds from the National Cultural Fund to benefit political allies, particularly around the 2026 election period. Seszták reportedly received substantial kickbacks linked to state bus purchases and other key projects, raising concerns about procurement practices.
In response to these actions, Hungary’s newly formed anti-corruption body intends to address several related issues, including political favors linked to residence permits and questionable local government expenditures. Notably, the entity has also set its sights on state company practices, implicating prominent figures such as real estate tycoon Daniel Jellinek.
Jellinek has expressed willingness to cooperate fully, maintaining that he is innocent of any wrongdoing. His involvement highlights the breadth of the ongoing investigations and the seriousness with which the government intends to pursue alleged corruption.
