The Grand Burstin Hotel in Folkestone met with unfortunate circumstances over the weekend when a fire broke out, causing extensive damage and raising alarms about the structural soundness of the building. The blaze, which began in the early hours of Saturday, led to the urgent evacuation of around 280 hotel guests and surrounding residents due to fears about safety risks.

Evacuation and Investigation

Following the inferno, Folkestone and Hythe District Council made the decision to evacuate 90 residents from nearby Pavilion Court as a precautionary measure, echoing concerns from safety inspectors over the building’s integrity. Temporary accommodation has been arranged for those displaced while assessments on the building’s condition continue.

Kent Police have categorized the incident as suspicious, urging witnesses to come forward to assist in their ongoing investigation. They are working closely with the Britannia Hotels Group, the entity managing the hotel, to uncover the reasons behind the blaze.

Emergency Response

The response from emergency services was swift, involving a deployment of 26 fire engines to manage the severe situation. Local businesses and community organizations rallied to support those affected, with the Three Hills Sports Park opening as a welfare center, providing essential services and comfort to evacuees over the weekend.

Susan Priest, the council’s chief executive, praised the community’s response, mentioning the help offered by entities like the Salvation Army and local businesses that ensured people had access to food and shelter.

Guests and residents shared harrowing experiences from the night. Among them was Ross Honeycomb, who recounted being awakened by alarms and witnessing smoke seeping from the hotel’s carpark. Another couple, Kevin and Kathleen Crawford, staying at the hotel for a holiday, described being startled by alarms but initially believing the situation was under control.

With safety as the paramount concern, the Britannia Hotels Group has affirmed their commitment to assist authorities while ensuring the wellbeing of guests and staff. As the investigation continues, the community remains hopeful for answers and a safe resolution.
