Farage Under Fire for Alleged Protection of Reform Candidate
Farage Faces Criticism for Supporting Candidate Accused of Racism
Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage has come under scrutiny following allegations he backed a mayoral candidate from the Reform Party, who was accused of making racist comments. The situation was revealed through an undercover ITV investigation that highlighted Farage’s actions regarding Chris Parry, the candidate at the center of the controversy.
The investigation depicted the internal rift within the Reform Party as senior officials urged Farage to act decisively against Parry after his inflammatory comments about Labour MP David Lammy came to light. Parry reportedly suggested that Lammy “should go home to the Caribbean” and questioned the allegiance of several politicians from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Internal Tensions and Controversies
Despite the mounting pressure, Farage faced criticism from Ed Sumner, the head of communications for Reform, for allegedly “protecting” Parry. Sumner expressed his concerns in a conversation with Farage, suggesting that Parry’s comments were overtly racist. The ITV documentary reveals Farage’s attempts to navigate these tensions, suggesting Parry should publicly apologize to Lammy as a resolution.
Sarah Pochin, one of the two female MPs for the Reform Party, also voiced her frustrations over gender dynamics within the party. In covert footage, Pochin described the environment as chauvinistic and hostile to women, airing her grievances about the difficulties faced by women in the political sphere.
Reform’s Ongoing Challenges
The incident adds to a series of challenges faced by the Reform Party, including previous instances where Reform officials were caught making inappropriate comments. Notably, other Reform councillors were exposed for making extreme threats and exhibiting racist and misogynistic behavior, which has led to resignations.
As the ITV documentary “Undercover: A Year in Reform” prepares to air, the spotlight remains on how Farage and the Reform Party will address these issues and the broader implications for their political standing.
