Ella Toone Returns to England Squad for Greece Playoff
Ella Toone’s dedication and positive attitude have earned her a last-minute recall to the England squad ahead of their Women’s World Cup playoff against Greece. The Manchester United midfielder, initially omitted from the lineup, stepped in to replace the injured Lucy Bronze. Bronze, who returned to Chelsea for recovery, suffered a minor injury prompting this change by head coach Sarina Wiegman.
Wiegman Lauds Toone’s Determination
Head coach Sarina Wiegman commended Toone for her proactive response after being left out of the initial squad. Upon receiving the news of her exclusion, Toone immediately set up a training routine in Spain, showcasing her commitment to improve. “She quickly moved to train and get better,” Wiegman noted, impressed by Toone’s resolve and maturity in dealing with the situation.
Toone, who has made significant contributions to the team with 69 caps and 24 goals, was initially sidelined alongside Chloe Kelly. Wiegman had cited performance levels as the reason. Toone, however, viewed the feedback as an encouragement to work harder. In the aftermath of Manchester United’s win over Liverpool, she expressed her determination to the BBC, saying, “I’ve got to keep working hard and use it as fuel to come back even better.”
Strategic Recall for Experience
Wiegman’s decision to recall Toone, rather than selecting a replacement right-back, underscores the weight of experience Toone brings to the squad as England faces Greece. The former European champions are gearing up for their crucial playoff match in Heraklion, Crete, with a robust squad ready to secure an early advantage before the return fixture in Leicester.
Path to World Cup Qualification
If successful against Greece, England will move forward to another two-leg playoff against Slovakia or Ukraine. Achieving victory in these matches is essential for qualification to the finals in Brazil next summer. While England finished as runners-up in the 2023 World Cup, their path to the next tournament has not been straightforward, mainly due to a strong competition from Spain in their qualifying group.
England defender Esme Morgan believes the team will need patience and discipline against Greece to score. Reflecting on past experiences, Morgan emphasized staying calm and persistent in front of a structured and defensive Greek team. “We just need to continue creating opportunities,” Morgan said, recalling a similar challenge they faced against Ukraine in previous qualifiers.
Greece, still aiming for a historic first qualification, will need to counteract England’s strengths, but Wiegman’s squad is likely to showcase their tactical superiority.
