Ebola Investigation: Nigerian and Kenyan Patients’ Possible Airport Encounter

Possible Airport Link Between Nigerian and Kenyan Ebola Cases

Health authorities are examining a potential connection between two Ebola cases originating in Nigeria and Kenya, both of which might have interacted at Uganda’s Entebbe airport earlier this month. This follows confirmation from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) that both patients transited the airport on October 3rd.

Dr Wessam Mankoula, head of emergency preparedness at the Africa CDC, highlighted that shared airport facilities or equipment could have played a role, although the investigation is ongoing and no definitive link has yet been established.

Nigeria is currently dealing with its first Ebola case in over ten years, involving a woman who traveled from Uganda through Addis Ababa before returning to Abuja. After developing symptoms a few days after arrival and testing positive on October 20th, she is undergoing isolated treatment.

Meanwhile, Kenya is managing nine confirmed Ebola cases, including their first death related to the current outbreak. One man, also passing through the Ugandan airport en route from the Democratic Republic of Congo, succumbed to the illness.

Officials are investigating whether both patients might have encountered each other or used the same facilities at the airport. While no contact has been conclusively confirmed, it’s a significant line of inquiry for authorities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has indicated it’s premature to determine the origin of the Nigerian woman’s infection. Dr Patrick Otim, a WHO emergency response official, noted the difficulty in acquiring a detailed journey log given her hospitalization status.

To bolster their investigation, Nigeria’s Centre for Disease Control is using genomic sequencing to trace the infection’s source and evaluate potential links between cases.

Previously, Ugandan officials stated that the Nigerian patient had visited eastern DR Congo for business, where the Ebola outbreak currently persists. However, no verified information has confirmed her visit there. Uganda maintains there are no active Ebola cases within its borders.

In response to these developments, Nigeria is extending its contact tracing efforts, beyond the initial 44 people believed to have been exposed. Most identified contacts are healthcare workers from facilities where the patient received care, alongside some family members. Authorities continue to work on quarantining high-risk individuals.

Back in Kenya, health officials have cleared the first group of people from quarantine following 21 days of monitoring without symptom development.
