China Urges Israel to Halt West Bank Settlement Activity
China’s Diplomatic Push in the Middle East
In a recent development, China has openly called for Israel to halt its settlement expansion in the West Bank. The call was made by Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi during a discussion with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, which took place at a conference in Azerbaijan. Wang Yi emphasized the situation of the Palestinians, describing it as one of the most significant injustices of the current era.
A Call for Renewed Dialogue
China, a long-standing supporter of the Palestinian cause, reaffirmed its belief in a two-state solution. The Chinese foreign minister highlighted that the immediate goal should be the reopening of access to Gaza to address the ongoing humanitarian issues. Beijing remains committed to collaborating with the global community to facilitate discussions aimed at a political resolution to these prolonged conflicts.
China’s Role as Mediator
Beijing has increasingly been positioning itself as a mediator in Middle Eastern disputes. This role became particularly notable in 2023 when China successfully brokered a reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Earlier, efforts were made by China, along with Pakistan, to mediate a ceasefire in the conflict involving the US and Israel against Iran. Furthermore, in 2024, China managed to get different Palestinian factions to agree on forming a temporary reconciliation government, although execution of the plan floundered.
Israel’s Tensions and Regional Security Concerns
Discussing the region’s dynamics, President Herzog expressed Israel’s ongoing aspirations for peace while addressing perceived threats from Iran and affiliated armed groups. Israel’s security concerns are consistently underscored by its military actions, which continue despite official ceasefires, maintaining an atmosphere of instability.
Ongoing Strife in Gaza
The region continues to face severe challenges. The ceasefire, which was brokered by the US, laid the groundwork for peace talks but unfortunately remains fragile. Reports indicate that since the ceasefire began in October 2025, over 1,400 Palestinians have died due to conflict-related actions involving Israeli forces. The situation is further compounded by accusations exchanged between Israel and Hamas over violations of the ceasefire conditions.
China’s diplomatic initiatives and calls for restraint underscore its growing involvement and influence in Middle East affairs, aiming to bring even the most long-standing rivals back to the negotiating table.
