Britain’s Policy Shift Strains Relations with Israel

UK’s New Stance on West Bank Settlements Strains Ties with Israel

The British government’s decision to halt trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank has triggered a significant diplomatic conflict with Israel. The move marks a substantial change in Britain’s approach to Israel-Palestine relations, stirring tensions with its long-time ally.

This shift in policy is part of a coordinated action by Britain and 11 other nations, including France and Canada, aimed at addressing contested Israeli settlements. The collective decision reflects anger in Israel and highlights how deeply the decision has stirred emotions in Jerusalem.

Britain’s steps to close its East Jerusalem consulate and withdraw its members from the International Gaza Support Centre underscore the gravity of the situation. These actions come in response to the British stance, which ties directly into new foreign policy directions underlined by Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband.

Miliband’s announcement aligns with the International Court of Justice’s ruling that the occupation, including military presence, is unlawful. Consequently, the UK has imposed restrictions not only on products from these areas but also on companies and industries that financially support settlement infrastructure.

These measures are more severe than anticipated, indicating a clear departure from past policies. Even more striking is Miliband’s poignant language, coming from a “proud British Jew” supporting Israel, addressing issues like “settler terrorism” and “ethnic cleansing” with stark directness.

This policy revision has sunk British-Israeli relations to a level unseen in decades, largely because of Miliband’s scathing criticism of the Israeli government’s apparent neglect of settler violence against Palestinians.

In Israel, the reaction was swift, accentuated by Foreign Minister Gideon Saar’s sharp critique. The announcement came amidst a politically charged atmosphere fueled by an impending Israeli election, reflecting public sentiments and governmental frustration at being singled out for punitive actions. Some Israelis, however, have reservations about the settlers’ extreme approaches, yet the legality of settlements remains a divided issue.

While the ban doesn’t target a large portion of Israeli trade, the diplomatic symbolism is undeniable. Many perceive an increase in international scrutiny, reflected over different platforms, potentially escalating tensions in Israel’s foreign relations further.
