BJP Criticizes Congress for Decisions Affecting Tamil Nadu and Kerala

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a significant attack on the Congress party, highlighting its detrimental impact on the interests of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This criticism comes on the 52nd anniversary of the Congress-led Central Government’s decision to cede Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka, which, according to BJP, has adversely affected Tamil fishermen and the local Catholic community.

BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi described this event as “another blackspot in Congress’s calendar of surrenders,” referencing historical territorial losses such as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Aksai Chin to China. He emphasized that the Congress’s earlier decisions have led to ongoing challenges for the region.

Concerns Over Alcohol Policy in Kerala

In addition to its criticisms in Tamil Nadu, BJP also targeted the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala. The party took issue with the UDF’s recent decision to significantly reduce the excise duty on low-alcohol liquor from **251%** to **121%**. The BJP claims this move will lead to increased alcohol consumption among the youth and ultimately diminish state revenue, thus benefiting liquor businesses.

Sudhanshu Trivedi expressed deep concern over this decision, especially in light of remarks made by Kerala’s Home Minister, Ramesh Chennithala, who stated that the state’s drug problem is escalating and poses challenges comparable to those faced by Punjab. He criticized both the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), suggesting they represent “two sides of the same coin” regarding liquor policy.

The BJP’s statements reflect broader concerns about how local policies affect public health and safety, especially in regions grappling with substance abuse issues. As the political landscape evolves in these southern states, the actions of both Congress and BJP will be closely scrutinized by the electorate.
