Bishop Ambrose Puthenveettil Criticizes UDF’s Budget Proposal on Low-Alcohol Beverages

Bishop Ambrose Puthenveettil, chairperson of the Temperance Commission of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC), has expressed strong opposition to the United Democratic Front (UDF) government’s recent Budget proposal, which includes tax cuts on low-alcohol beverages.

In a statement released in conjunction with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Friday, the bishop emphasized that no political party or government should disregard public sentiment while pursuing policies detrimental to societal interests. He remarked,

“The government should take into account the report submitted by former Excise Commissioner Rishiraj Singh during the previous government’s tenure, which warned that the production and distribution of low-alcohol beverages could expose even students to the dangers of alcohol,”

highlighting the potential risks involved.

Bishop Puthenveettil urged the UDF to adhere to its historical stance on liquor and honor the commitments outlined in its election manifesto. He warned that continuing with a liquor policy perceived as harmful to society could provoke significant public protests. This statement underscores the bishop’s commitment to advocating for the well-being of the community.

Regarding the UDF government’s anti-drug initiative, known as ‘Operation Toofan’, the bishop cautioned that the achievements of this mission should not be compromised by encouraging the proliferation of another form of intoxication. He reiterated the need for policies that genuinely reflect the public’s interests and reinforce the government’s responsibility to safeguard its citizens’ health and safety.
