Located on Soho Road, the Handsworth Baby and Family Bank provides crucial items such as nappies, baby formula, clothing, and toys without charge, serving as a lifeline for families overwhelmed by financial strain.
Increasing Demand Among Working Families
Initially focused on low-income households, the Dhillons have observed a shift, with more families comprising full-time workers now seeking their services. “We started by mainly supporting families in need of nappies,” explained Karvinder, noting the change in necessities as living expenses surged in recent years.
Kavita highlighted the need for basic items like formula and wipes, stressing that appearances do not always reflect someone’s financial reality. “People can seem well-off externally, but internally face significant challenges,” she remarked.
Creating a Warm Environment
The baby bank shares its space with Dhillons Boutique, which discreetly allows individuals to utilize the services without feeling judged. This setup diminishes the stigma often associated with seeking help, transforming it into a normalized experience.
Kavita describes their initiative as offering a “warm and welcoming space,” something crucial as the demand for their support has only grown since they opened in 2024. By providing this support, the Dhillons feel fulfilled, knowing they’re positively impacting families’ lives.
