Assam Police Prevent Major Terror Attack by Arresting ULFA(I) Members
The Assam police announced on Friday, June 26, 2026, that they successfully foiled a significant terror attack by apprehending two suspected members of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) or ULFA(I) in Tinsukia district.
The arrested individuals were identified as Humenjyoti Baruah, 27, and Papu Moran, 30, both holding the title of “second lieutenant.” The operation took place in Jagun, a town located on the border with Arunachal Pradesh, with collaboration from central agencies.
According to Tinsukia’s Superintendent of Police, Mayank Kumar, the police recovered crucial items including two AK-56 rifles, two hand grenades, 172 rounds of AK ammunition, opioids, and jungle survival kits from the suspects. Kumar noted, “Preliminary investigations revealed that the ULFA(I) had tasked them to target and kill people in Tinsukia town indiscriminately to create terror. The planned modus operandi indicates the influence of external actors to destabilize the region.”
As part of their journey, the duo traveled in a hatchback after entering Assam through Jairampur town in Arunachal Pradesh. Interestingly, they had previously crossed from Myanmar into Changlang district in Arunachal Pradesh.
Changlang is known as one of the three TCL (Tirap, Changlang, and Longding) districts in Arunachal Pradesh, which have seen significant activity from multiple factions of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN). Members of ULFA(I) and other extremist groups based in Assam often collaborate with NSCN cadres for hit-and-run operations that are orchestrated from hidden camps in Myanmar’s Sagaing Division.
The NSCN’s Khaplang faction and its various sub-groups manage these camps in Sagaing Division, charging other groups fees for protection, access to weapons, and training.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region, where external influences threaten stability. Authorities continue to remain vigilant in addressing the threats posed by militant groups operating across national borders.
