Argentina Ends Probe into President Milei’s Alleged Crypto Scandal
In a significant development in Argentina, the criminal investigation into President Javier Milei concerning a cryptocurrency controversy has been officially closed. The dismissal, granted by Judge Marcelo Martinez de Giorgi, came following a request from prosecutors who determined that the inquiry lacked legal grounds.
Milei’s Crypto Misstep
The controversy sparked when President Milei, alongside his sister Karina, was implicated in promoting a cryptocurrency known as $Libra. The digital currency experienced a brief surge in value upon the President’s endorsement, only to plummet dramatically soon after. This sudden crash resulted in substantial losses for many investors, igniting allegations of fraudulent activity.
Though Milei strongly denied any wrongdoing, stating he shared information about the crypto solely in good faith, critics were quick to accuse him of a “rug pull,” a term used to describe situations where investors are enticed into a fraudulent scheme only for the promoters to withdraw, leaving the investors with devalued assets.
Judge Dismisses Charges
In dismissing the case, Judge de Giorgi stated that the incident failed to meet the criteria for a criminal offense. He elaborated that there was no evidence of “criminally relevant deception” perpetrated by the President. This ruling alleviates some of the pressure on Milei, who has been under public and political scrutiny since the case emerged.
The fallout from the $Libra incident saw members of Argentina’s Congress call for Milei’s impeachment. Despite these challenges, the President maintained that his actions were without malice and insisted that his message was not meant as an official endorsement.
Defending Actions and Future Measures
In his defense, Milei explained that his social media post was retracted after he realized he was not fully informed about the cryptocurrency’s framework. He emphasized that potential investors carried out transactions willingly, aware of the inherent risks associated with cryptocurrency investments.
The presidential office has confirmed that the Anti-Corruption Office will continue to evaluate whether Milei’s actions, albeit not criminal, violated any ethical standards expected from someone in his position.
While the dismissal has brought temporary relief, the event highlights the growing tensions and complexities in the rapidly evolving space of digital currencies, and the potential for political figures to inadvertently find themselves embroiled in such controversies.
