Edward’s mission is to coax the reclusive author into penning another novel, specifically one involving her famed creation, Tom Ripley. His strategy involves his deep admiration for her work, hoping to reignite her passion for writing.

The film commences with Highsmith, jaded and preferring the company of her pets over people. Her isolating lifestyle is disrupted when Edward arrives from New York, eager to persuade her to write again. Highsmith, known for her indifference towards people and more so for her pets, challenges Edward with the task of plotting an inventive murder, accepting to write only if satisfied.

Complex Layered Plot

The narrative structure intricately weaves three storylines. While the real-world interaction between Highsmith and Edward is one, the other is Edward’s imagined tale of a slick American aiming to scheme a wealthy heiress in Rome, played by Olivia Cooke. This story is an extension of Edward’s creativity based on a woman he encountered during his journey to Highsmith.

Despite the intriguing premise, the film’s execution stumbles. Joanna Murray-Smith, who adapted the screenplay from her own play, attempts to capture Highsmith’s acidic personality but sometimes falls short. While Mirren embodies Highsmith with gusto, the character’s caustic remarks often lack the expected sharpness, offering broader, less impactful observations instead.
