Capturing Bradford’s ‘Daytimers’: A Forgotten Dance Movement Now in Tate Exhibition

A Forgotten Dance Scene Unveiled

In the early days of Bradford’s vibrant cultural landscape, a clandestine communal experience was unfolding away from the public eye. Hidden behind the mundane routines of city life, the British Asian “daytimers” scene was born—a daytime dance revolution that thrived in the shadows but is now seeing the light of day at Tate Britain.

This once underground movement, known for its afternoon club events, was vividly captured by photographer Tim Smith. His images, taken in the 1990s, displayed a British Asian youth culture that was redefining identity through dance and music. Now, these significant snapshots are joining an inspiring exhibit curated by former Vogue editor Edward Enninful at Tate Britain, providing a window into the various cultural shifts of the decade.

Tim Smith: The Man Behind the Lens

Smith’s journey to document Bradford’s ‘daytimers’ began unintentionally, amidst his broader exploration of South Asian community life in the city. Having built connections and trust in the community through the Bradford Heritage Recording Unit, he was introduced to the daytimers phenomenon by chance.

Daytime gigs—affordable for young people and accessible as they utilized otherwise empty nightclub spaces—became hubs for a new generation blending traditional South Asian influences with modern British sounds. These events not only provided a reprise for celebration but crucially signaled the emergence of a British Asian identity, woven through music, fashion, and self-expression.

Among his most celebrated captures is Rani Kaur, known as DJ Radical Sister, a trailblazer within this milieu, exemplifying the energy and empowerment found in these gatherings. Smith’s vivid depictions of youthful joy and cultural pride at these events now stand as a testament to the era.

A Quiet Legacy Sees the Light

However, Smith’s photographs were not always shared widely due to potential cultural sensitivities. Concerns of inadvertently exposing attendees—many trying to balance between cultural traditions and personal freedoms—kept the images mostly out of public distribution until recent years.

The recognition of his work at major exhibitions now stimulates reflection and pride among those who experienced the daytimers scene firsthand. While initially met with reservation, these photographs now serve as a historic timestamp, preserving the vibrancy of a unique cultural expression.

Smith’s imagery, now alongside other influential works of the 1990s in The 90s: Art and Fashion exhibition, commemorates not just a dance movement, but a pivotal chapter in British cultural evolution.
