Michaela Walsh Takes Bronze at European Boxing Championships

Michaela Walsh has achieved a commendable bronze medal at the European Boxing Championships in Bulgaria, following her semi-final defeat in the featherweight category. The accomplished 33-year-old boxer from Belfast faced Vladislava Kukhta, a formidable competitor originally from Kazakhstan but representing Hungary, in a match that ended with a 4-1 split decision.

The match was marked by a strategic technicality, with both athletes bringing different styles to the ring. Kukhta, known for her aggressive approach, managed to sway the judges with her performance, scoring [29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 28-29] across the five cards. Despite the setback, Walsh remained positive about her performance.

Reflecting on the Performance

Walsh shared her thoughts post-match, highlighting the tactical nature of the bout. “It was very cagey and the tactics were to try and lead her on into counters,” she explained, giving credit to Kukhta’s skill as an opponent. Despite losing, Walsh was proud of her efforts and determined to bounce back from what she referred to as a previously “stale period.”

Her achievements this year have been significant, adding to her silver medals at the Commonwealth Games and the Strandja Tournament. She views this setback not as an end but as a promising step towards future competitions, including the Olympic qualifiers next year.

The Semi-Final Breakdown

The match began tentatively with both boxers taking their time to find their rhythm. Kukhta, fighting as a southpaw, managed to find success early on, impressing the judges in the initial round. As the fight progressed, Kukhta’s strategy of volume clashes contrasted with Walsh’s more strategic approach, which focused on leading and countering.

Walsh required a strong finish in the final round, and she started energetically, landing a sharp right. Despite this, Kukhta continued to land effective shots, securing her position. Although Walsh rallied and impressed four of the five judges in the final round, it was ultimately not enough to close the gap, leading to her exit from the tournament.
