Indian Government Implements Significant Hike in Passport Fees

In a notable announcement on Thursday, the Indian government revealed substantial increases in passport fees across various categories. This includes a staggering 67% rise in charges for the issuance or reissuance of ordinary passports, while the fees under the Tatkal scheme have seen a dramatic 250% increase. These changes are set to take effect from July 1.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) detailed the new pricing structure for passport applications. An ordinary 36-page passport for applicants aged 18 years and above will now cost Rs 2,500, a significant leap from the previous charge of Rs 1,500. For those opting for the expedited Tatkal scheme, the fee will increase to Rs 5,000, which is up from Rs 2,000.

Furthermore, for an ordinary 60-page passport, the new fee will be Rs 3,500, compared to the earlier Rs 2,000. The most considerable hike, however, is evident in the reissue of a 60-page passport when a document is lost or damaged, with fees soaring from Rs 2,000 to an astounding Rs 8,500.

This increase may have significant implications for many applicants, making it essential for individuals to review these changes before applying. As travel demand continues to rise, the government appears to adjust its fees in response to economic conditions and service demands.
