EU Calls for Lifting US Travel Ban on Palestinian Delegation

EU Pressures US to Reconsider Visa Denial to Palestinian Delegation

The European Union has issued a strong request to the United States, urging the reconsideration of its decision to deny visas to officials from the Palestinian Authority (PA). This appeal is aimed at enabling them to participate in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. This year marks the second consecutive denial of these visas by the US, a move that has drawn notable international attention and criticism.

EU spokesperson Anouar El Anouni emphasized the importance of the US fulfilling its obligations as a host country under the existing headquarters agreement with the United Nations. The EU’s call comes in the wake of a UN decision to allow Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to address the UNGA through a prerecorded message during its 81st session.

US Stance Amidst International Disapproval

The United States government recently confirmed the continuation of its visa restrictions on officials from both the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The US justified these sanctions by citing the PA’s alleged violations of US law, specifically their pursuit of international recognition for Palestinian statehood outside of direct negotiations. Additionally, the PA’s appeals to international legal bodies against Israel and their financial aid to individuals regarded by the US and Israel as convicted attackers provided further grounds for this decision.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also voiced his concern over the US’ actions, expressing worry about its impact on Palestine’s participation in UN activities. He highlighted the potential limitations it could impose on Palestine’s engagement with international diplomacy.

Palestinian Reaction and Broader Implications

The Israeli government, however, faces no similar US travel sanctions, which adds a layer of controversy, especially given an existing International Criminal Court warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on alleged war crimes. This discrepancy has not gone unnoticed and has fueled further debate regarding equality in international diplomacy.

President Abbas is poised to use his address at the UNGA as a platform to advocate for the recognition of Palestinian statehood. His speech is expected to touch on the grave humanitarian situation in Gaza, and the controversy surrounding the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has welcomed the UN resolution that allows Abbas to speak, viewing it as a triumph over efforts to suppress Palestine’s participation in the global stage. The broader international community remains attentive to how these developments will influence ongoing dialogues for a two-state solution and future peace negotiations.
