Patsy Lockerby, who runs a local tearoom, has witnessed firsthand the stark reduction in foot traffic, which she attributes to numerous shop closures on Malew Street. “I’m the only shop open,” she mentions, highlighting a growing concern that Castletown is being bypassed by both locals and tourists.

The lack of parking is another critical issue impacting Castletown’s appeal. Barry James, another local entrepreneur, stresses the need for proper planning to resolve accessibility issues, noting that the existing parking limitations hinder both locals and visiting coach passengers. “A strategic plan is necessary rather than ad-hoc solutions,” he asserts.

Economic Struggles Intensify

Economic pressures further compound the town’s challenges, with residents feeling the pinch of increasing living costs. Window cleaner Scott Findlay points out the disparity between rising expenses and stagnant wages, exacerbating financial strain for those with families.

Pensioner Maureen Sloan echoes these concerns, stating that most of her fixed income is absorbed by basic living expenses, leaving little room for discretionary spending. She critiques the absence of local Manx products in supermarkets as well.

Meanwhile, Lisa Corkill’s frustration with taxation policies adds to the list of grievances as she criticizes the taxation of benefits for pensioners and families.

Calls for Government Intervention

Residents and business owners alike are calling for government support to rejuvenate the town. Lockerby suggests incentivizing entrepreneurs to set up shop in the centre, while others seek assistance in addressing costs that burden local enterprises.
