Spain’s Luis de la Fuente Secures Extended Contract Until 2032

Celebrated coach Luis de la Fuente will continue to lead Spain’s national football team until 2032 thanks to a freshly inked contract extension. This decision comes in the wake of de la Fuente’s impressive achievements, including steering the team to victory in the European Championship in 2024 and clinching the World Cup title this past summer.

Securing Long-Term Vision

The 65-year-old, whose previous contract was set to conclude in 2028, will guide Spain through pivotal tournaments, not the least of which is the 2030 World Cup. The tournament, hosted partly in Spain alongside Portugal and Morocco, will coincide with the World Cup’s centenary and feature additional matches in South America.

Remarkable Track Record

Since taking over from Luis Enrique in late 2022, de la Fuente has impressively led Spain in 41 competitive matches with only two losses. Under his direction, they have claimed three notable trophies, including a Uefa Nations League victory in the 2022-23 season and a runner-up finish to Portugal in the 2024-25 edition.

In a resounding display of his leadership, Spain won its second World Cup by narrowly defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time. Earlier successes include a memorable 2-1 victory over England in the European Championship final in 2024.

Support from the Top

Rafael Louzán, the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, praised de la Fuente’s impactful tenure. “The coach is well-loved, and this offer aligns his financial package with top coaches globally,” Louzán stated at the World Football Summit in Madrid. He acknowledged de la Fuente’s significant contributions, both as head coach and in various levels of Spain’s national youth teams, including a European Under-21 Championship win in 2019.

Spain is slated to face England at Wembley in their upcoming Nations League match on 26 September, marking another chapter in de la Fuente’s illustrious career.
