CPI(M) Calls for Focus on Farmers and Workers Over Corporate Interests
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has urged the State government to prioritize the concerns of farmers, workers, and employees rather than catering to corporate interests and land development projects. This appeal was made during a press conference held by party State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao on Thursday.
Rao criticized the government’s electricity policies, claiming they have placed a heavy financial burden on consumers while failing to reveal the complete implications of power purchase agreements. He demanded transparency regarding the costs associated with sourcing power from Rajasthan under the Adani-SECI agreements and questioned the government’s assertions regarding reduced power tariffs.
The CPI(M) leader accused the administration of misleading the public by promoting minor reductions in electricity charges, which he argued were overshadowed by larger financial burdens stemming from previous revisions. He also expressed concern about the lack of tariff reductions despite pre-election promises, calling this inconsistency into question.
Concerns for Tobacco Farmers
Highlighting issues faced by tobacco farmers in Prakasam district, Mr. Srinivasa Rao noted a significant drop in market prices. He stated that despite the Chief Minister’s assurances of providing fair prices, farmers are suffering substantial losses. He urged both the State and Central governments to take necessary action to safeguard farmers’ interests in the market.
Additionally, he criticized the limitations placed on urea supply for tenant farmers, arguing that many cultivators are now resorting to the black market for fertilizers. He urged the government to ensure that all eligible farmers have access to an adequate supply of fertilizers.
Critique of Transport Policy and Services Privatisation
On the matter of transport policy, Mr. Srinivasa Rao opposed the proposal to transfer electric buses to private operators, asserting that these vehicles should remain under the jurisdiction of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC). He condemned the broader trend of privatising municipal services and assets, reiterating CPI(M)’s solidarity with ongoing protests by municipal workers, employees, and teachers.
Call for Judicial Inquiry
In a related matter, he insisted on a judicial inquiry into the alleged custodial death case of Sai Krishna, emphasizing that only an independent investigation can uncover the truth behind the incident.
