Dover Protest Response Criticized by Council Leader

Dover Port Protest Draws Criticism for Delayed Police Response

A recent protest at the Port of Dover has sparked controversy over the police’s reaction time. Kevin Mills, head of the Dover District Council, expressed dissatisfaction with the speed at which officers responded to the unexpected demonstration on Saturday. According to Mills, the protest seemed to take various agencies by surprise.

Chanting slogans like “stop the boats,” hundreds of masked protesters effectively blocked streets leading to the port, resulting in significant traffic delays. The blockade, orchestrated by the Patriot Platform—a group reportedly comprising members from anti-migrant organizations—paralyzed the area for nearly four and a half hours.

While Kent Police have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, Jonathan Reynolds from the Cabinet expressed concerns about the nature of the protest. He emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations, contrasting it with the disruptive tactics used by the protesters. “I sympathize with those around Dover affected by these actions,” Reynolds stated. Despite acknowledging the stretched resources of law enforcement, he stressed the need for a strategic review.

The protest sparked a social media buzz, with figures like Tommy Robinson and Danny Thomas lauding the protest’s organization. Online, Thomas highlighted the gratitude expressed by some local residents, describing the demonstration as disciplined and well-executed.

However, Reynolds criticized figures like Robinson, accusing them of exploiting situations for personal gain rather than addressing underlying issues. He pointed out that such actions often aim to capitalize on online followings rather than pursue real solutions.

Hope Not Hate, an organization monitoring extremist activities, identified the Patriot Platform as the orchestrator. This group, reportedly formed in July, comprises anti-migrant activists who remained largely uncommunicative with media outlets during the protest. Some participants echoed the protest’s messages, briefly responding with “send them back” and “stop the boats” to questions from journalists.

As discussions continue over the protest’s implications and law enforcement’s handling, the call for a thorough examination of the events that took place remains prominent among community leaders.
