Indian Government Defends Defence Minister’s July Statement Amid Controversy Over Operation Sindoor Casualties

NEW DELHI: Following the release of the names of six soldiers who lost their lives during Operation Sindoor, the Indian government, on Saturday, countered accusations from the opposition that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had misled Parliament in July last year by stating that no casualties had occurred among security forces.

In an official statement, the Defence Ministry clarified that Singh’s remarks were aimed at addressing a prevailing misconception that Indian pilots had perished during Operation Sindoor.

“Certain posts circulating on social media platforms have sought to misrepresent the Raksha Mantri’s address delivered on the floor of Parliament on July 28, 2025. These posts have selectively quoted an isolated portion of the speech to falsely imply that the Raksha Mantri claimed that no Indian soldier lost his life during Operation Sindoor. These are deliberately misleading and factually incorrect,” the statement read.

The ministry emphasized that critics have constructed a controversy by neglecting to consider the full scope of Singh’s remarks. It noted that at the time of his speech, a misleading narrative was being propagated in media and social platforms, suggesting significant Indian military losses during the operation, which was fundamentally untrue.

The statement further detailed that Singh’s assertion was a direct response to this erroneous narrative, aiming to uphold the morale and integrity of the Indian Defence Forces. His address highlighted the successful operations conducted, during which over 100 terrorists and Pakistani soldiers were neutralized, alongside substantial damage to Pakistani military infrastructure.

“It is important to place the Raksha Mantri’s address in its full and proper context. His statement was, in its entirety, a proud and accurate account of the remarkable success of Operation Sindoor, demonstrating unmatched precision and professionalism by the Defence Forces,” the ministry said.

The controversy arises on the heels of the opposition’s claims that Rajnath Singh’s remarks misrepresented the situation in the House. On Friday, the government officially released the names of the six fallen soldiers who bravely fought during the military operation against Pakistan in May last year.

Among the honored are five soldiers from the Army and one from the Indian Air Force. They have been identified as:

• Subedar Major Pawan Kumar from Headquarters, 10 Infantry Brigade
• Rifleman Sunil Kumar from the 4th Battalion, J&K Light Infantry Regiment
• Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar from the 5 Field Regiment
• Agniveer Mood Murali Nayak from the 851 Light Regiment
• Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh from 237 Field Workshop
• Sergent Surendra Kumar from the 39 Wing of the Indian Air Force

These soldiers’ names will be perpetually honored at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, where their sacrifices will be immortalized on the granite bricks of the memorial’s Tyag Chakra (Circle of Sacrifice), ensuring that their ultimate sacrifice remains in the hearts of the nation.

Operation Sindoor was initiated on May 7, 2025, in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. The Indian armed forces executed precision strikes against nine terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, targeting infrastructure tied to terrorist organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen, effectively neutralizing over 100 terrorists during the mission.

In retaliation, Pakistan launched drone attacks and artillery shelling, resulting in a four-day military standoff. India later targeted radar installations in Lahore and additional facilities in the vicinity of Gujranwala before both nations agreed to a ceasefire on May 10, following discussions between their Directors General of Military Operations. Recently, on the first anniversary of the operation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterized Operation Sindoor as an embodiment of “India’s firm response against terrorism and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding national security,” noting the armed forces’ unparalleled courage and precision in dealing with those responsible for the Pahalgam incident.
