Sanjay Dina Patil Apologizes for Abusive Remarks to Journalists

NEW DELHI: In a surprising turn of events, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Dina Patil has issued an apology following an abusive altercation with journalists earlier on Thursday. This incident occurred just hours after he hurled expletives during a heated encounter with the press.

“Ever since I joined the Shiv Sena, I have been subjected to continuous humiliation. When journalist friends came again this morning, I folded my hands and requested them not to ask me any more questions on this issue,” Patil stated.

He further explained, “However, as the same question was repeatedly asked, the situation escalated. In the confusion and heat of the moment, I unintentionally used inappropriate words. I sincerely express regret to all journalist brothers and sisters for that.”

Yet, he emphasized that it was inappropriate to spread false information or use derogatory language regarding his family members, including his wife, daughter, mother, and deceased father. “You are free to say whatever you want about my political position, but I request that my family be kept out of this,” Patil insisted.

Background to the Incident

Earlier that day, Sanjay Dina Patil, one of six rebel Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs who recently joined the ruling Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, reacted explosively when reporters questioned him about the stance of his daughter, corporator Rajul Patil, who has publicly stated her continued support for Shiv Sena (UBT). During this confrontation, he threatened journalists, reportedly saying, “Why are you poking your nose in my affairs? If you come again, I will kill you,” as reported by PTI.

Additionally, journalists pressed him for comments on a letter from Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut to the Mumbai Police, which sought action regarding Patil’s earlier comments threatening violence against protesters opposing his defection.

Official Reactions

Aiming to alleviate tensions, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde addressed the media outside the state legislature, stating, “Sanjay Dina Patil had no intention of insulting journalists. If anyone has been hurt by his words, he has expressed his willingness to express regret. I have clearly told him that if he has made any untoward remarks, he should express regret.” Shinde attributed Patil’s outburst to persistent personal attacks over the past year, particularly since the split in the Shiv Sena in 2022.

Shinde also expressed that the language used could be troubling and noted, “Sanjay Dina Patil was disgusted by such language. He is neither against the media nor angry with journalists.”

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis opted not to comment on the situation, stating that he needed more information before making a judgment. “I was travelling and have no idea about the entire controversy. Let me first gather all the information. It is wrong to threaten any person,” Fadnavis remarked.
