Gambia Utilizes Seized US Property Funds for Victims of Jammeh’s Rule

Gambia Allocates Funds from Seized US Mansion to Victims of Yahya Jammeh’s Rule

The Gambia is set to compensate the victims of its former leader, Yahya Jammeh, using funds derived from the sale of his mansion in the United States. This decision follows the seizure of the property, located in Maryland, which was reportedly bought with funds obtained through illegal means. The US authorities confiscated the mansion after it was determined to be purchased with misappropriated Gambian public funds.

The Gambian authorities have confirmed receiving $2.5 million from the sale. These proceeds are earmarked for individuals who suffered under Jammeh’s oppressive regime, which spanned over two decades following his coup in 1994. His rule was marked by numerous human rights violations, including cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.

Commitment to Transparency and Justice

According to the Gambia’s Reparations Commission, the funds will be distributed with an emphasis on accountability and transparency. Authorities have emphasized their dedication to ensuring that those impacted directly benefit, acknowledging the severe hardships endured during Jammeh’s rule.

Yahya Jammeh’s reign ended in 2017 after he initially accepted and then rejected the election results that favored Adama Barrow. His refusal to vacate power resulted in military intervention from West African countries, which ultimately pressured him into exile in Equatorial Guinea.

Extensive Investigations Reveal Misuse

A subsequent inquiry into Jammeh’s presidency unveiled massive corruption, revealing his ownership of 281 properties in The Gambia alone, alongside assets in the US and Morocco. Furthermore, his control over numerous bank accounts underscored questionable financial dealings. The investigation concluded that Jammeh had misappropriated over $300 million, far beyond what his official income could justify.

During his term, Jammeh faced accusations of overseeing severe atrocities, including political murders, disappearances, and acts of torture. The commission probing his administration reported that these violations led to the deaths of approximately 240 to 250 individuals, both Gambians and others.

This recent development is a pivotal step in addressing past injustices as the nation attempts to move beyond a period rendered dark by human rights abuses. Redirecting ill-gotten gains towards victims’ reparations represents a significant stride towards healing and justice for The Gambia.
