Annual Health Reviews: A Positive Step for Women with PMOS

Women affected by what was once called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), recently renamed as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), are applauding the introduction of annual health evaluations as a positive move. This initiative aims to enhance diagnosis and offer better long-term care for those impacted by the syndrome.

Neelam Heera-Shergill, a Birmingham resident diagnosed with the condition at 18, recalls the overwhelming uncertainty she faced post-diagnosis. At that time, she feared the condition might threaten her dreams of becoming a mother. Despite the condition impacting approximately one in eight women in the UK, Neelam noted a significant lack of understanding around the syndrome.

Experiencing symptoms such as irregular, painful periods, and fatigue, Neelam often found her studies disrupted. Multiple visits to her general practitioner resulted in advice to change her lifestyle, but nothing prepared her for the diagnosis that altered her life.

Neelam’s journey into understanding PMOS motivated her to establish Cysters, a Birmingham-based charity dedicated to supporting women with this condition. By hosting monthly events, Cysters provides a community for women to share their experiences and find solidarity in facing PMOS together.

Understanding PMOS: Symptoms and Management

PMOS is characterized by symptoms like irregular menstrual cycles, excessive hair growth, and possible infertility issues. The syndrome involves abnormal hormone levels, including increased insulin, which can exacerbate problems like weight gain and elevated testosterone levels. Unfortunately, the exact cause remains unidentified, though it often shows a familial pattern.

The NHS suggests lifestyle changes such as weight loss and a nutritious diet to alleviate some effects of PMOS. Additionally, medications are available to manage symptoms like excessive hair growth and irregular periods. While there is no definitive cure, these interventions can significantly improve quality of life for those affected.

Looking Forward: Improved Care and Awareness

The change in the syndrome’s name to PMOS, coupled with the annual check-ups recommendation, represents a significant step towards advancing care. These developments aim to not only improve health outcomes but also to enhance awareness and understanding among healthcare providers and the public.

For women like Neelam, who felt isolated upon diagnosis, these measures offer hope for a future where women with PMOS receive comprehensive care and support. They highlight the importance of continued advocacy and education to ensure that the needs of women with PMOS are met more effectively.
