Turkish Football Federation Suspends 147 Officials for Betting Violations
Turkish Football Authorities Suspend Officials Over Betting Breaches
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has issued 45-day suspensions to 147 football club officials, including the president of Trabzonspor, Ertugrul Dogan, for violating betting regulations. This decision follows a detailed investigation, which began with the provisional suspension of 448 individuals suspected of engaging in betting activities while holding official positions within Turkish football.
According to the TFF, the officials who have been suspended held roles in clubs across the top two divisions of Turkish football over the last five years. These actions underscore the regulatory framework established by not only the TFF but also global bodies such as FIFA and UEFA, which strictly prohibit football-related individuals from placing bets on the sport.
A total of 301 suspects from the initial group were not charged due to insufficient evidence. The TFF’s decision reflects an ongoing effort to uphold the integrity of football in Turkey, a mission that has seen significant enforcement actions over the past year. Last November, the Federation banned numerous referees and players following a thorough investigation into betting activities.
This strict enforcement comes as part of a broader crackdown by Turkish authorities, aiming to eliminate betting-related corruption within the sport. The issue of betting by football personnel has been a growing concern, prompting these decisive measures.
By addressing misconduct vigorously, Turkish football officials hope to deter future violations and maintain a transparent and fair sporting environment. As the investigation continues, more developments are likely in the coming months.
