Saracens Owner Defends CEO Amid Alleged Management Turmoil
Saracens Owner Affirms Support for CEO Ed Coetzee
Saracens owner Dominic Silvester has decisively backed the club’s chief executive, Ed Coetzee, in light of a recent article suggesting disarray at the management level since Silvester’s takeover in 2022. The contentious piece, appearing in The Times, claimed that the transition from the former owner Nigel Wray introduced significant instability.
Silvester, who took ownership of the rugby team as part of a £32 million acquisition, issued a public letter addressing these claims directly. He expressed unwavering confidence in Coetzee, who was appointed in July, and commended him for numerous accomplishments at the club’s helm.
The Times article cited a high turnover rate in the executive team, naming Coetzee as the third chief executive within two years, and speculated that this instability could deter sponsors from forming long-term partnerships with Saracens. Despite these assertions, Silvester countered that Coetzee had made considerable progress, citing events hosted at StoneX Stadium, including an all-women athletics meeting and a Gaelic football clash between Mayo and Kerry.
Further, Silvester commended the bolstered executive team, which now includes Jason Thomas as the chief financial officer and Rob Cook as the chief operating officer. Together, he noted, they bring substantial experience and are united in their aspiration to bolster the club’s financial sustainability while maintaining a competitive edge in sports.
Highlighting the club’s strategic direction, Silvester reiterated the firm dedication of the executive team towards fostering a sound financial future for Saracens, assuring supporters, players, and partners of their commitment to elevate the club’s stature. “Our ambitions are significant, and we are aligned in our mission to drive Saracens forward,” he declared.
