Rural Health Campaigners Demand Immediate Action and Fair Access

Healthcare campaigners are raising serious concerns about the future of medical services in rural areas, urging that these communities should not be treated as an afterthought. They have called upon the Northern Ireland Executive to develop a strategic approach to address rural health access concerns.

Four prominent campaign groups have joined forces in a collaborative letter, urging the formation of a cross-departmental working group dedicated to safeguarding healthcare access for rural populations. These groups represent various communities whose access to acute and essential medical services is under threat.

Concerns Over Service Reductions

Donal O’Cofaigh, a spokesperson for Save Our Acute Services based in County Fermanagh, underlined the urgent need for executive ministers to evaluate the ramifications of service cuts from local hospitals. O’Cofaigh highlights that people in rural areas are already facing life-threatening situations due to reduced healthcare options.

The collective effort includes SoS Causeway Hospital, Save Our Services Daisy Hill, and the Down Community Health committee. These groups have been vocal in opposing the closure or reduction of acute services in their regions.

Service Suspensions and Community Impact

In recent years, several local hospitals have witnessed the suspension or permanent removal of critical services. In February 2022, emergency general surgery was temporarily halted at Daisy Hill Hospital and was made permanent by 2024. Additionally, maternity services may soon be consolidated to other locations, severely impacting local access.

Similarly, Causeway and South West Acute Hospitals have experienced service suspensions, leading to increased travel distances for specialized care. Campaigners are worried that such moves are detrimental to rural communities, effectively turning residents into “second-class citizens.”

Advocating for ‘Presumption of Restoration’

The campaigners are advocating for a “presumption of restoration,” emphasizing the need to reinstate services that have been withdrawn without proper evaluations. This plea is based on the assertion that past healthcare decisions were made with insufficient cross-departmental consultation and understanding of the community impact.

In light of these challenges, the groups are urging the government to reconsider its strategy and to prioritize equitable healthcare access. The formation of a dedicated working group could be the first step towards ensuring rural communities are no longer sidelined in health policy planning.
