Instagram’s Puzzling Approach to Women’s Health Content

Instagram’s Unsettling Restrictions on Women’s Health Content

Irene Breen, the owner of a company selling pregnancy pillows, faced unexpected challenges when Instagram suddenly banned her adverts. The reason? The term “pregnancy” was deemed problematic by Meta, Instagram’s parent company. This abrupt decision forced Breen to overhaul her online presence, impacting her business significantly over the course of almost a year.

Breen’s dilemma is one shared by many in the women’s health sector. Influencers, charitable organizations, and even educators have reported similar issues. Content is frequently masked behind sensitivity filters, limiting its reach. Such filters were initially intended for explicit material but seem increasingly applied to women’s health topics.

Shadowbanning and Content Suppression Concerns

The campaign group CensHERship has highlighted the increasing incidence of content suppression. They surveyed multiple stakeholders, which revealed a staggering 96% experienced unwanted restrictions. These trends posed considerable threats to the dissemination of critical health information.

Dr. Carolina Are from the London School of Economics points out that the reliance on artificial intelligence to moderate content often leads to mistaken identifications and subsequent shadowbanning. This algorithmic misjudgment bans many posts without recourse, often stripping the users of an ability to challenge these decisions.

Essential Health Information Gets Censored

Athena Lamnisos, leading the gynaecological cancer charity Eve Appeal, shared that posts about crucial health issues, including #vaginalcancer, vanish on Instagram. An informative post about vulval cancer was inexplicably removed. Though it was later restored with restrictions, such obstacles hinder the timely delivery of potentially life-saving content to those who need it most.

Hertility, a company offering fertility tests, encountered a similar situation. A video focusing on endometriosis was pulled down, bizarrely categorized as political content. This perplexing classification underscores the inconsistency in Meta’s approach to women’s health content.

While Meta asserts it is working with women’s health organizations to refine its systems, the ongoing challenges experienced by businesses and charities highlight a significant disparity in social media content regulation. These hurdles act as barriers to sharing vital health knowledge, particularly for women’s health issues that demand open discussion and awareness.
