Carys Thurlby’s Journey: From Endometriosis Pain to Marathon Runner
Transformation After Decades of Pain
Carys Thurlby, a woman from Worcester, lived under the weight of endometriosis pain for several decades. The affliction, which began in her teenage years, confined her to a life of chronic discomfort and affected her daily rhythm. All this changed when she underwent a life-altering surgical procedure that freed her from years of suffering.
The Long Road to Diagnosis
Thurlby’s journey with endometriosis started when she was a teenager. Despite experiencing severe symptoms during her GCSE exams, she initially believed that the intense pain she felt was typical. It was only at age 19, after a laparoscopy, that she was diagnosed. This marked the beginning of a series of medical interventions, culminating in a hysterectomy that finally alleviated her symptoms.
A New Lease on Life
Following her surgery, Thurlby experienced an extraordinary transformation. Over 18 months, she shed 10 stone, or 140 pounds, and regained vitality that she hadn’t known in years. The combination of surgical relief and newfound energy allowed her to embrace a more active lifestyle. Running, which once seemed impossible, became a passion. From not being able to run more than a minute, she has gone on to complete a half marathon and is training for the London Marathon.
Advice to Others
Thurlby’s story resonates with many women facing similar health challenges. Vicki Shattock, another woman with a parallel journey, emphasizes the importance of pushing for diagnosis and treatment. She advises women to listen to their bodies and advocate for their health when symptoms are dismissed.
Moving Forward
Carys Thurlby’s experience underscores the importance of awareness and treatment options for endometriosis. Her journey from debilitating pain to marathon training is not only inspiring but also highlights the potential for change with the right intervention and perseverance.
